What Changed in TOEFL Speaking for 2026?
Starting January 21, 2026, the TOEFL Speaking section is shorter and more focused on real communication.
Instead of long academic speeches, you now:

• Answer short interview-style questions

Task 1
Listen & Repeat
In Task 1, you listen to sentences and repeat them exactly.The exam is listening for:• Pronunciation accuracy• Word stress and rhythm• Natural speed• Clear sentence endingsYou don’t need long answers here. You just need to copy the sentence clearly and confidently.
Simple Practice Idea
• Listen to a short English sentence (YouTube, podcast, teacher, etc.)
• Repeat it immediately, trying to copy the rhythm and stress.
• Record yourself on your phone.
• Replay and check: do you finish all the sounds at the end of words?
Do this for just 5 minutes a day to improve your pronunciation for Task 1.

Task 2
Interview Response
In Task 2, you answer short questions, like a simple interview.
The exam is listening for:
• Clear, complete sentences
• Good vocabulary (not too basic, not too memorized)
• Correct grammar
• Natural fluency and rhythm
A Simple Structure You Can Use Every Time
Use this 3-step structure for almost every answer:
1. Direct Answer – Say your opinion or choice.
2. Explain – Give 1 clear reason.
3. Example – Add a short example or story.
